Selecting a barcode scanner can overwhelming, considering the number of models and configurations available. Hopefully this barcode scanner selection guide will help you narrow down your search and find the right scanner for your application

Wired or Wireless

The first obvious question is to decide whether you need a wired or wireless barcode scanner. If you will be working near your computer a wired barcode scanner will save you money; however, the mobility offered by a wireless barcode scanner can greatly increase your working efficiency.

Ruggedization

Most industrial equipment is rated on the ingress protection rating scale, also known as "IP rating". Many manufacturer's also perform drop testing to demonstrate the unit ruggedness. If you are operating in a retail or other relatively clean environment, you won't need to worry about the IP rating. In most small businesses an IP rating of 52-54 will be sufficient and if you need the ultimate in ruggedization choose a scanner with IP64 or IP65 rating.

Barcode Scanning Engine

The barcode scanning engine itself can vary between low cost CCD imagers, Laser Scan engines, and 2D Barcode Imagers.
